When asked about trust and confidentiality, one student expressed uncertainty: "I asked it before, and it said none of the info goes anywhere. But I don't know if it’s truthful."

Sam Genovese, Vice Principal at Oasis Academy, emphasizes that while school staff are trained to recognize warning signs of mental health issues, AI cannot substitute for human judgment. He points out that physical cues such as appearance, behavior, and interactions are critical indicators that a chatbot can’t observe.

And this is the part most people miss: there's a massive risk attached to relying solely on AI for delicate mental health support. Dr. Elvira Perez Vallejos, a prominent expert in digital mental health technology at the University of Nottingham, warns that in a decade, society might look back in horror at the types of online support our children are accessing now.

To illustrate her concerns, researchers at the Institute of Mental Health conducted practical tests using prompts designed to mimic real crises. They used Snapchat's 'My AI' feature, creating an account portraying a troubled 15-year-old experiencing sadness and depression. The chatbot responded with empathy and directed users to its internal resources. Yet, when asked about self-harm, the AI suggested responses that could potentially lead to dangerous actions.

Dr. Vallejos highlights that the AI’s responses often lack emotional nuance: "It's very direct and objective but fails to consider the psychological nuance of a user in crisis," she explains. Even more concerning was that when asked to craft a farewell letter, the AI did so without questioning the context.
