Heartbreak struck on Wednesday as college football legend Gary Danielson's final sign-off was abruptly cut short by a CBS commercial break. Can you imagine pouring your heart and soul into a career for 36 years, only to have your farewell message interrupted? It's a scenario that unfolded during the Sun Bowl postgame show between Arizona State and Duke in El Paso, TX.
Alongside play-by-play announcer Brad Nessler, reporter Jenny Dell, and the production crew, Danielson was delivering his final thoughts when the dreaded commercial break swooped in. The timing was, to put it mildly, unfortunate.
The sign-off, which had been beautifully executed up until those final moments, was meant to be a tribute to Danielson's long and successful career. But here's where it gets controversial: CBS was criticized for cutting him off before he could finish his message.
Danielson's legacy in the broadcast booth is undeniable. He's been a fixture in college football for over three decades, and the lead college football analyst for CBS Sports since 2006. He worked with Verne Lunquist at CBS until Nessler took over play-by-play duties in 2016. Interestingly, Danielson and Nessler also teamed up at ABC back in 1997.
On December 14th, Danielson called his 17th Army-Navy game for CBS, an event that clearly held a special place in his heart, as he was visibly emotional during his sign-off.
Danielson, a former NFL quarterback for the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns, recently shared some of his favorite calls from his career. He noted, "My best stuff is being a good teammate and letting the play-by-play guy do what he has to do… And as a quarterback and as a leader, you’re always wanting to say something, and sometimes you just have to shut up.”
