Frigid Air Returns: What to Expect Next Week! (2026)

Get ready for a wild weather ride! As we bid farewell to this week's wintery blast, a new wave of frigid air is set to sweep across the nation next week. But here's where it gets controversial: while some regions will experience a brief respite, others are in for a deep freeze.

On Saturday, the cold snap is expected to ease up, with no record-breaking temperatures and a slight improvement in the feels-like factor. However, most areas will still be dealing with seasonably cold and blustery conditions. Wind chills on Saturday afternoon could dip as low as the mid-20s in Chicago, mid-30s in New York City, and mid-40s in Washington D.C.

Overnight into Saturday morning, a quick burst of light snow and wintry mix hit the I-95 corridor from Washington D.C. to New York City. While it didn't amount to much more than a light dusting in most places, some spots from DC to western New Jersey saw up to half an inch of measurable snow.

Icy and slick conditions may linger into Saturday morning in these areas, but things should start to improve as the day progresses. Wind chills this morning, though still chilly, are warmer in most places compared to Friday morning.

And this is the part most people miss: another blast of cold air is on its way, bringing near-freezing high temperatures and sub-zero lows to the Midwest and Northeast by Monday. Meanwhile, the West will start to warm up, with some spots potentially breaking daily record highs next week.

A fast-moving snowstorm, fueled by lingering cold air, will march through the Dakotas and Nebraska on Saturday, then into Wisconsin and Illinois on Sunday. The snow will blanket the Dakotas and Nebraska through the afternoon, reaching Iowa and Minnesota in the early afternoon.

The heaviest snowfall is expected in Iowa and southern Minnesota, with accumulations of 3 to 7 inches possible through Sunday morning. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for cities like Fort Dodge, Waterloo, Mason City, and Worthington.

By evening, Chicago and Milwaukee could see the snow start to fall, with accumulations of 3 to 4 inches across these areas. The higher totals will be more towards the western regions.

At least 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected from Montana and the Dakotas down to southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

This weather system will continue its eastward journey, bringing the next wave of cold air but breaking down as it reaches the Northeast. Aside from some normal lake-effect snow, the Northeast is expected to see minimal snowfall.

In the Rocky Mountains, from Idaho and Montana down to Colorado and Utah, a significant snow event is underway and will continue through the weekend. Most places at higher elevations can expect more than a foot of snow, with some spots receiving over 2 feet.

The snow is currently falling and will continue on Saturday, before tapering off overnight and winding down on Sunday morning. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for these areas.

So, there you have it! A rollercoaster of weather is upon us. What are your thoughts on these upcoming conditions? Do you think the forecasts are accurate, or will we see some surprises? Feel free to share your weather wisdom and predictions in the comments below!
