Gaming Industry M&A Boom: Q2 2026 Report Unveils $2.3 Billion in Deals (2026)

The video game industry is experiencing a surge in mergers and acquisitions, with Q2 2026 seeing a reported $2.3 billion in deals, according to Aream & Co's Video Game Market Update. This figure represents a significant post-pandemic high, with mid-market gaming content acquisitions driving much of the growth. The biggest deal was the $1 billion acquisition of Loom Games by Scopely, a mobile-first game studio owned by the Saudi Arabian government. This trend of private investment is particularly interesting, with a six-fold increase in year-on-year results, driven by interest in AdTech and gaming AI 'mega-rounds'.

One thing that immediately stands out is the continued strength of PC gaming on Steam, with spending up 13% year-on-year to $5.5 billion. Franchise sequels like 007: First Light, Subnautica 2, and Forza Horizon 6 have driven much of this engagement. However, the report also notes the growth of new IP, with Capcom's Pragmata, indie multiplayer game Meccha Chameleon, and the popular PvE pirate survival adventure, Windrose, all contributing to this trend. Nintendo revenue was also a key driver in Q2 2026, with revenue rising 90% year-on-year due to the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its associated games.

In contrast, PlayStation and Xbox revenues have declined, with PlayStation revenue falling 5% and Xbox revenue declining 7%. This is likely due to a slowdown in hardware sales, driven by price rises and the aging of their console systems. These shifts in the industry suggest that while video games remain big business, areas of investment and interest may be shifting, and some companies are currently facing a downturn.

From my perspective, what makes this particularly fascinating is the contrast between the growth of new IP and the decline of established console giants. This raises a deeper question: as the industry evolves, will we see a shift towards more diverse and innovative game development, or will the dominance of established companies continue to shape the market? In my opinion, the answer lies in the hands of independent developers and the growing popularity of mobile gaming, which may challenge the status quo and drive the industry towards a more dynamic and inclusive future.
