Before his Tommy John surgery in 2024, Oviedo had a solid season with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2023, pitching 177.2 innings. His slider was a standout, ranking 11th in MLB with a Run Value of plus-11. However, his fastball was a different story. It ranked 178th out of 179 qualified starters with a Run Value of minus-10. Despite decent speed (96 mph), Oviedo's four-seam fastball lacked the vertical movement to deceive batters.
But here's where it gets interesting: in 2025, Oviedo returned with a revamped fastball. The same pitch that batters hit .275 with a .465 slugging percentage in 2023 suddenly became a weapon, limiting hitters to a mere .149 average and .383 slugging. The Whiff rate skyrocketed from 18.5% to 31.3%, and the Stuff+ metric jumped from 82 to 115.
The Red Sox front office must be thrilled with this transformation, but there's a catch. The 2025 sample size is relatively small at 40.1 innings, and Oviedo's walk rate, already a concern at 4.2 BB/9 in 2023, increased to 5.1 in 2025.
