This simple yet loaded query, which opens Nirvana's swan song, 'All Apologies,' encapsulates the heart of Kurt Cobain's final artistic statement. 'All Apologies' wasn't just thrown together overnight. Cobain had been toying with the song's essence for years, sketching it out on a 4-track recorder in his Olympia, Washington apartment shared with Dave Grohl way back in 1990. This song marked a significant sonic shift for Cobain, moving away from the typical grunge sound to a more delicate, introspective feel. "I wish I was like you, easily amused," Cobain admits, before lamenting, "Everything is my fault," promising to take responsibility for his perceived wrongdoings. The choruses provide a respite, with the lyrics "In the sun, I feel as one," accompanied by a dramatic clash of instruments that cuts through the sadness.
During Nirvana's performance at the Reading Festival on August 30th, 1992, Cobain dedicated 'All Apologies' to his wife, Courtney Love, and their daughter, Frances Bean. He described the song's tone as "peaceful, happy, comfort – just happy happiness."
With the addition of beautiful cello by Kera Schaley, 'All Apologies' swells with sentimentality, providing a contrast to the aggression found in other tracks on the album.
