GPEI Welcomes Rotary’s Michael McGovern as Next Polio Oversight Board Chair
GPEI is excited to announce that Michael (Mike) McGovern, who chairs Rotary International’s PolioPlus Committee, will assume the role of Polio Oversight Board (POB) Chair starting January 1, 2026.
After five years of dedicated leadership, Dr. Chris Elias, President of Global Development at the Gates Foundation, will transition out of the chair position. The initiative extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Elias for his steadfast dedication and strategic vision in advancing the global polio eradication effort. Under his guidance, the program achieved notable milestones, including resolving an imported wild poliovirus outbreak in Malawi and Mozambique, and distributing 2 billion doses of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 to more effectively halt type 2–variant poliovirus outbreaks.
Joining the POB as the new Chair, Mr. McGovern brings a deep reservoir of experience and a long-standing commitment to polio eradication. His leadership is expected to accelerate momentum toward a world free of polio. About Michael K. McGovern
Mike McGovern has chaired Rotary International’s PolioPlus Committee since October 2014. He has represented Rotary on the Polio Oversight Board since 2018 and previously led its Finance Accountability Committee. His initial monetary contribution toward polio eradication dates back to 1988.
McGovern joined Rotary in 1986 as a member of the Rotary Club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth, Maine. He has held numerous Rotary roles, including director and vice president of Rotary International, and trustee and vice chair of the Rotary Foundation.
Beyond Rotary, his service includes terms as president of the Maine Municipal Association and the Maine Town and City Association, chairmanship of ecomaine (the state’s largest recycling organization), leadership of the Rotary Action Group for Family Health and AIDS Prevention, global chairmanship of the Rotary Leadership Institute, and membership on the Board of Visitors of the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service, where he earned a Master’s in Public Policy and Management before the Muskie School’s naming.
McGovern’s professional career spans the Town of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, USA, from his start as an intern in 1977 to his 31-year tenure as town manager, retiring in 2016.
