Seatbelts and Pregnancy: A Study on Safety and Design (2026)

The findings of a recent study conducted by the University of British Columbia (UBC) have revealed a concerning issue regarding seatbelt usage during pregnancy. The research, led by biomedical engineers, found that nearly nine out of ten pregnant participants failed to achieve the recommended seatbelt placement, even after receiving instructions and hands-on guidance. The study, which involved 333 participants at various stages of pregnancy, utilized 3D body scanning technology to document the changes in seatbelt fit. The recommended positioning, as outlined by the NHTSA, places the shoulder belt between the breasts and centered on the shoulder, while the lap belt sits below the abdomen, snugly across the hips and pelvis. However, the research revealed that achieving this correct placement is a significant challenge for many pregnant women.

One of the key findings was that while most participants positioned the lap belt correctly, only a small percentage (11.4%) managed to place the shoulder belt between the breasts as recommended. As pregnancy progresses, the expanding abdomen can push the shoulder belt off its intended position, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a phenomenon known as 'nesting' was observed, where the lap belt would fold into the soft tissue beneath the abdomen instead of lying flat against it, affecting nearly one-third of participants.

This study underscores the need for a reevaluation of seatbelt design and guidance for pregnant individuals. The researchers emphasize that seatbelts are essential for crash safety, significantly reducing the risk of death and serious injury. However, the current lack of tailored guidance for pregnant women may be a critical factor in the observed failure to achieve proper seatbelt placement.

Dr. Peter Cripton, the lead researcher, suggests that the study presents an opportunity to enhance vehicle safety research by considering the unique challenges posed by pregnant anatomy. The collaboration between UBC and the Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) is now focusing on developing computer models of pregnant anatomy to evaluate and improve future restraint system designs. This partnership aims to address the specific needs of pregnant occupants and ensure that seatbelt systems are optimized for their safety.
