Prepare to be amazed as we dive into the thrilling world of horse racing and the incredible story of So Happy!
The Rise of So Happy: A Tale of Determination
So Happy, a name that truly fits, has left the racing world in awe. After an unexpected debut win at a staggering 38-1 odds, this horse proved that it was no mere fluke. On Saturday at Santa Anita, So Happy made a grand encore, showcasing its talent and potential.
The Grade 2, $200,000 San Vicente Stakes was a true test for So Happy, facing seasoned winners for the first time. Yet, this 3-year-old colt, under the guidance of Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, surged ahead in the final furlong, leaving the 1-2 favorite, Buetane, in its wake. So Happy's victory by two lengths was a testament to its raw talent and the skill of its trainer, Mark Glatt.
"He backed up that first race with an incredible performance," Glatt said, highlighting the horse's consistency.
But here's where it gets interesting...
So Happy, despite its name, started the race at the rear of the field, along with Buetane. Acknowledgemeplz, trained by Doug O'Neill, took the lead early on, setting a fast pace. As the race progressed, So Happy began its charge, steadily gaining ground on the leader.
Entering the final stretch, So Happy's momentum was undeniable. It sped past Acknowledgemeplz and then fought valiantly to hold off Buetane's late charge. The winning time of 1:21.12 on the fast track was a true testament to So Happy's ability.
"He was full of energy and excitement out there," Smith remarked. "I was thrilled with how he handled the distance, and his performance gives us a lot of hope for the future."
Buetane finished a respectable second, with Acknowledgemeplz in third. Thirsty Rebel and Greenwich Village completed the field.
So Happy's story is one of determination and talent. Owned by Norman Stables LLC and Saints or Sinners, this Runhappy colt was purchased for $150,000 at last year's OBS March sale. Its debut win at Del Mar, coming from just off the pace, was a sign of things to come.
"We had high hopes for him," Glatt admitted. "He's a unique horse with a lot of character. We wanted to give him a chance to prove himself, and he certainly did that."
With a Grade 2 win under its belt, So Happy's future looks bright. The next step could be a two-turn test, potentially leading to the prestigious Santa Anita Derby (G1) in April. But before that, the Robert B. Lewis (G3) and San Felipe (G2) races await, offering further challenges and opportunities.
So Happy's journey is a reminder that sometimes, the underdogs surprise us all. Will this happy horse continue its winning streak? Only time will tell.
